The Irreverence of Gesture at Numa Sala
An Analysis of the Exhibition that Transforms Painting into Pure Energy and Open Conversation.
At Numa Sala, our mission is to foster dialogue—between the artist, the artwork, and the audience. It is in this spirit that we present the exhibition “FOR THE TIME BEING. ESPIRRO” (or simply “ESPIRO”), a show that injects a dose of raw energy and fearless colour into the heart of Penha de França.
The title itself, “ESPIRO” (which translates to something akin to “Sputter” or a sudden release), evokes something sudden, uncontrollable, and essential. This spontaneous nature is imprinted on every canvas.
The Power of Uninhibited Expression
The works on display, as seen in the images, are a tribute to gestural and abstract painting. The brushstroke is fast, the texture is dense, and the layers of paint reveal a process of construction and deconstruction.
Shocking Palette: Intense chromatic contrasts dominate. We see vivid pinks, sunny yellows, and electric blues clashing and merging with dense patches of black, white, or earthy grey. This high-voltage palette lends the pieces an almost tactile vibration, where colour becomes the primary vehicle of emotion.
The Abstraction of Encounter: While the compositions are predominantly abstract, suggested shapes—an unexpected outline or a repetitive pattern—sometimes emerge. This is the artist’s invitation to the audience: to find the figurative within the abstract, to give personal meaning to the explosion of colour and form.
Artworks that Step Off the Wall and Question the Space
A fundamental curatorial aspect of this exhibition is how the pieces inhabit the Numa Sala space.
One of the artworks is intentionally installed on a freestanding support, elevated on simple wooden legs, right in the centre of the room. This choice is crucial:
Breaking Convention: By removing the canvas from the wall, we break the classic formality of the gallery. The artwork ceases to be a passive object and becomes a presence, almost a figure, within the space.
Invitation to Circulate: The central piece compels the visitor to walk around it, view it from all sides, and interact physically with its volume and its unexpected installation. This reinforces our concept that art is a three-dimensional dialogue.
“FOR THE TIME BEING. ESPIRRO” is, ultimately, a liberation. It is art that refuses to be contained, that jumps off the canvas to address the observer, and that presents itself at Numa Sala with the force of an irreverent gesture.
