Demystifying Art: A Quick Guide to Understanding Serigraphy, Lithography, and Engraving

When you look at a printed work, have you ever wondered about the difference between a “Serigraph” and a “Lithograph”? These are common terms in the art world, especially in contemporary art, and understanding them helps you better appreciate the technique, the artist’s work, and the value of the piece.

Serigraphy (Screen Printing)

What it is: A process where ink is forced through a fine mesh screen (originally silk, hence “serigraphy”) onto the support (paper, fabric, etc.). Areas that should not be printed are blocked on the screen.

Visual Characteristics: The ink is applied in thicker, more uniform layers, giving a sense of “solid,” flat colour. When examining closely, you will see the slight texture of the ink on the paper. It is a popular technique in Pop Art (think Andy Warhol).

Lithography

What it is: A planographic printing technique based on the repulsion of water and oil. The artist draws directly onto a limestone or metal plate using greasy materials. The plate is moistened and then inked; the ink adheres only to the greasy areas of the drawing.

Visual Characteristics: It allows for very fine details, subtle shading, and a wide range of tones, almost like a pencil drawing or watercolour. It leaves no noticeable relief or texture, as the ink is in the surface, not on it.

Why Is Knowing the Difference Important?

Value and Complexity: Different techniques require different degrees of savoir-faire and equipment. For example, engraving (where the artist cuts the plate) is a very physical and artisanal process, which can influence its value.

Artist’s Intention: The artist chooses the printing technique to achieve a specific effect. Serigraphy is ideal for bold colour and graphic design, while lithography is perfect for organic lines and expressive details.
